DLL Programming
A DLL is a program external to TradeStation that is specially designed to communicate with TradeStation.
DLLs have two main uses:
Code Protection and Security
If you have indicators or strategies that you wish to sell then you don't want your code getting into the hands of others. TradeStation EasyLanguage is easily hacked. But by moving your code into a DLL you prevent others accessing that code and you can apply settings to allow or disallow users the ability to run your code. See this page for more information on licensing.
Integration with external systems
The world is now cloud and AI based. A DLL allows TradeStation to 'talk' to the cloud, to cloud based services and to AI services. DLLs provide a gateway outside of TradeStation. JAM uses DLLs in its TGVs and Telegram Alerts products to communicate with the outside world.
DLLs have an added benefit if you work with multiple trading platforms such as NinjaTrader, MultiCharts or MT4/MT5. A DLL contains a core set of logic that can be used across different trading platforms. Once that core logic is written it can be used across all platforms, when it is correct you know it will be correct across all platforms, and you don't have to worry about different security on different platforms. All your code is held securely in a single place.
JAM uses the C++ programming language to write DLLs which is one of the most widely used programming languages in the world, and is extremely fast and secure. While some trading platforms integrate with the C# programming language it is only C++ that integrates with all platforms.
